The world could be under pressure, yet optimism persists. A fresh honor from the interdisciplinary festival the Starmus festival aims to encourage people to take action.

The medal will be given to pay tribute to the celebrated scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It is designed to celebrate those who advocate for life on Earth.

Honoring a Legacy

The first recipients are expected to be announced at the Starmus VIII festival in Tenerife and La Palma, which will run from 17–22 October next year.

According to statements that Goodall, who was a member of the festival's board, had supported the award’s creation. “The vision of having this award, and the festival being tasked to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a representative said. “She expressed that she wanted this to happen. This is likely because of the unique relationship she had with us.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize enduring projects carried out to build an environment improved for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement to continue such efforts,” commented a relative.

Structure and Vision

One of the founders of Starmus indicated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be inspired by the Stephen Hawking medal for science communication that we created exactly 10 years ago,” it was explained. Goodall herself received of that very medal.

Sharing thoughts about the future for Earth, one figure said, “Frankly, it's challenging to feel hopeful. The current political climate globally represents a dismissal of evidence. This situation really cripples the world’s efforts.”

“In truth, the prospects aren't very good therefore we must commence reconsidering, more deeply about the consequences of our actions. This concern encompasses not only global warming, but also the entire manner in which we interact with nature.”

Consequently, observers believe it was an opportune moment to emulate her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding the prize, we will be considering this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to change our relationship with wildlife with which we share the planet.”

A pressing concern currently is the proliferation of misinformation. The central topic of the upcoming Starmus festival is set as “the search for truth”.

“It has become apparent that factual reality is becoming contested where political interests is involved. This is a perilous development,” he commented. “The science of climate is a science; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Optimism and Resolve

The goal is that this honor will spur positive change. “The purpose is motivating others to get involved and to care and to work in that direction, really. Whether or not we’re optimistic, we have to look at working the best we can,” a statement concluded. “Be prepared for failure, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection shared hope that “with guidance and when empowered, humanity are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, pointing to the programs of a foundation which, among its other activities, assists the next generation become engaged locally, animals, and the natural world.

“As Jane Goodall often told everyone, the choices we make each day are significant and it is up to us the kind of difference we make,” he said. “We still have an opportunity and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will provide inspiration and increase understanding regarding the positive actions that people are making.”
